The 1920s Wichita Monrovians dominated the 1922 Colored Western League. Though the league folded after one year, the Monrovians continued to play local teams and other town teams on barnstorming tours. The team opened their own ballpark, Monrovia Park, in 1922.
In 1923, the Monrovians went 52-8, playing against many white teams.
On June 21, 1925, the Monrovians played the Wichita champter of the Ku Klux Klan, Klan No. 6, at Island Park. The Wichita Beacon advised that “strangle holds, razors, horsewhips, and other violent implements of argument” would not be allowed in the ballpark. On a hot day, the game was close for the first five innings, then back and forth before the Monrovians won 10-8.
Monrovians catcher T.J. Young and infielder Newt Joseph went on to play for the Kansas City Monarchs.
