Vance Cauble

Vance Cauble
Hall of Fame Class of 1997

Born in Benedict in 1913, this right-handed pitcher spent four seasons in the minor leagues before coming to Wichita to pitch in the 1939 NBC World Series.  His Mt. Pleasant (TX) Cubs lost the championship to the Duncan (OK) Haliburtons.

In 1940, Cauble switched to play for the Enid (OK) Eason Oilers. Cauble pitched them to a championship, becoming the first to pitcher to win four games in the tournament.  He was named Most Valuable Player.

The Oilers followed their championship with a trip to Puerto Rico, where they won a seven-game World Series against island champion Guayama.  Upon their return to Wichita, a 75-car caravan met the team bus and escorted them to Enid.
