Luciean Louis Clinton was born in 1937 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He owned and operated an oil business in Wichita after his major league career.
Clinton broke into the major leagues with Boston in 1960. He was playing rightfield when Roger Maris hit his 61st home run in Yankee Stadium. In 1962, Clinton was the Red Sox regular right fielder and hit .294 with 18 home runs. He also hit for the cycle on July 13, against Kansas City.
The next season, he hit 22 home runs, but his average fell to .232. Clinton spent five seasons with the Red Sox and was traded to Los Angeles Angels in 1964. He spent a year and a half with the Angels and, late in the 1965 season, he played for \Kansas City and Cleveland.
Clinton’s major league career ended with the Yankees, with whom he played in 1966 and part of the 1967 season. He hit .247 in his eight-year career.
As a businessman in Wichita, Clinton was an outstanding amateur golfer. He competed in many local and state amateur tournaments and was a perennial title contender until his death in 1997 at the age of 60.
