John Gabler was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1930 but graduated from Shawnee Mission High School (now Shawnee Mission North) in Overland Park.
Gabler spent more than two decades in organized baseball and played in the majors for three abbreviated seasons. He pitched for the Yankees in 1959 in three games and 21 games in 1960. He was 4-4 over the two-year period.
In 1961, Washington selected him in via the expansion draft and he was 3-8 for the Senators that season, his last. In Gabler’s three major league seasons, he was 7-12.
From 1964 to 1968 Gabler was a frequent performer in the NBC Tournament. After retiring from baseball, Gabler moved back to Kansas City, where he operated a nursery in Overland Park. He died in 2009 and is buried in Monticello Union Cemetery in Shawnee.
