Gile was born in South Haven in 1923. He was an outstanding baseball umpire for many years at the collegiate and national semi-pro level.
He also worked small-college football and basketball games in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference for two decades from 1961 to 1981.
He officiated the KCAC football championships in 1979 and 1980, the Rodeo Bowl in 1979 and the 1969 Silver Bowl commemorating 100 years of college football. He was inducted into the Kansas Collegiate Officials Hall of Fame.
Gile died in 2005 in Wichita.
