Gus Hetling was born in St. Louis in 1885 and had a brief major league career, appearing in two games with the Detroit Tigers in 1906.
Hetling, however, had a brilliant career in the minor leagues. His professional career started for the Class D Iola Gaslighters in 1903. He played for the Class C Wichita Jobbers in 1907 and 1908, hitting .318 his last season.
In 1915 he was rated the best third baseman in the early history (1908-1915) of the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League. He was an outstanding bunter and pinch hitter with power.
Hetling returned to Wichita to play for the Class A Wolves in 1915 and 1916. He remained in Wichita where he died in 1962 at the age of 77.
