Valis McLean
Hall of Fame Class of 2014

For 37 years, Val McLean coached Allen County Community College in Iola.  During that time, the Red Devils won 1155 games, seven Jayhawk Conference titles and appeared twice in the NJCAA World Series.  During McLean’s tenure, 48 players signed professional contracts and more than 500 went on to four-year universities.

McLean was raised on a farm in Lewis, Kansas and was an all-state basketball and football player.  Lewis High School did not offer baseball, so he drove to Dodge City to play American Legion ball.  McLean would go on to play baseball and basketball at Dodge City Community College and Fort Hays State, earning all-conference honors at both schools.

McLean broke into coaching at Kansas State University, where he was an assistant before coming to Allen County.  In addition to coaching baseball, McLean served as Allen County’s director of guidance and taught personal development classes.  McLean has a Ph.D. in counseling psychology.
