Galen McSpadden came to Seward County Community College in Liberal and won 1,243 games as the coach at Seward County, seventh all-time in the NJCAA ranks.
McSpadden’s Saints won thirteen Jayhawk West Conference championships. In 2004, they finished fifth at the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.
McSpadden has been named Jayhawk West Conference Coach of the Year five times.
Under McSpadden, 85 Saints players were either drafted or signed professional contracts. He coached 181 All-Conference selections (101 First Team), 55 NJCAA All-Region VI selections, 12 Conference Freshmen of the Year, seven Conference Most Valuable Players, three NJCAA National Batting Champions, three Region 6 Most Valuable Players, four NJCAA Region 6 Gold Glove Award Winners, and one NJCAA Central District Defensive Player of the Year.
McSpadden was also athletic director at Seward and served as head and assistant coach for the Liberal BeeJays, for whom he played in the early 1970s.
Following McSpadden’s retirement from Seward in 2018, he became a volunteer assistant at the University of Texas-Arlington.
As a player, McSpadden was a standout pitcher at Southeast Missouri State. He was drafted by San Diego in the 6th round of the 1974 MLB Draft. He spent four years with the Padres’ organization, reaching the Triple A level and was on the Padres’ 40-man roster when an arm injury ended his playing career in 1978.McSpadden’s son-in-law, Terry Tiffee, played four seasons in the major leagues and was a member of the bronze medal-winning 2008 USA Olympic baseball team.
