Born in Norton, Dennis Walker served the Salina Fire Department for 31 years and spent even longer as an umpire.
Walker spent three years in professional baseball, umpiring in the Northern League and Florida State League. After that, he turned his attention to college baseball, working game in the Missouri Valley and Big 8/Big 12 conferences.
Among the thousands of games he umpired was Wichita State’s first game under Gene Stephenson, in 1978.
In addition to his college duties, Walker umpired summer league baseball and the National Baseball Congress World Series for more than 25 years.
During the offseason, Walker officiated college football and basketball around Kansas.
Following the 2006 season, Walker retired after 43 years of umpiring and officiating.
