Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Loaded with professional players, the Boeing Bombers dominated the National Baseball Congress World Series in 1954 and 1955 and won the Global World Series in 1955.

In 1954, they defeated the Springfield (OH) Generals in the NBC championship.  The Bombers were led by major leaguer and Wichita native Daryl Spencer, who was serving an Army hitch at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  Along with Spencer, outfielders Ernie Brogan and Byron Watkins were named to the all-tournament team.

In 1955, Spencer was named World Series MVP as the Bombers beat the Sinton (TX) Oilers for the championship.  Logan, second baseman Jim Mitchell and pitchers Jim Morris and Mike Werbach were named all-tournament.

Following the NBC World Series in Wichita, the Bombers represented the US in the eight-team Global World Series played in Milwaukee’s County Stadium.  With wins over teams from Mexico, Colombia, Hawaii and Canada, the Bombers breezed into the final, where they rematched with the Hawaii Red Sox.

This time, the Red Sox surprised them, winning 8-6 to set up a winner-take-all championship.  The game went 11 innings before the Bombers won 7-4, with Spencer taking MVP honors.

Most members of the Bombers worked at Boeing, assembling B-47E Stratojets and B-52 Stratofortress bombers.  The team was managed by Cy Eppler, who is among the thirteen team members enshrined in the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame.
