John Augustus “Josh” Billings was bornin in Grantville, an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, in 1891 and went on to play at Kansas State University.

Billings, a catcher, played in the major leagues for 11 seasons, starting with the Cleveland Naps in 1913.  In 1919, Billings moved to St. Louis to play for the Browns.  His final season was 1923.

During World War II, Billings managed the Kenosha Comets in the All-American Girls Professional League.  He died in 1981 at the age of 90.
