Greg Brummett
Hall of Fame Class of 2009
Wichita State’s signature moment in athletics was authored by Greg “Spike” Brummett in the 1989 College World Series. Pitching a complete game against Texas in the championship, Brummett struck out the final hitter to start the Shockers’ championship celebration.
Brummett won three games in the College World Series and was named Most Valuable Player. That same season, he led the nation with 18 wins and was the Missouri Valley Conference’s pitcher of the year.
Brummett was drafted by San Francisco in the 11th round of the 1989 amateur draft. He won his major league debut with the Giants in 1993. Later that same season, he was traded to Minnesota and finished a combined 4-4 in 13 games.
Brummett retired from professional baseball in 1996. He then entered college coaching, first as a pitching coach at North Carolina-Charlotte. After four seasons in Charlotte and one season at Air Force, Brummett became head coach at Cloud Community College in Concordia in 2004.
The College World Series named him to their 1980s All-Decade team and voted him the 23rd best player in CWS history.
