Hall of Fame Class of 1949

Born in Illinois in 1891, Earl Hamilton grew up in Oswego.

Hamilton broke into the major leagues in 1911 with the St. Louis Browns.  The next season, he pitched the first no-hitter in Browns’ history.  It was the first no-hitter in major league history in which a strikeout was not recorded.  Hamilton and the Browns beat Detroit 5-1.  The Tigers’ run came on a walk to Ty Cobb and an error.

Hamilton would pitch seven seasons with the Browns, winning 59 games.  His best season was 16-18 in 1914.  He had a 2.50 earned run average and pitched five shutouts.

He played a year in Detroit before moving to Pittsburgh for six seasons.  He won 55 for the Pirates from 1918-1923, including a 13-win season in 1921.

Hamilton finished his career in 1924, making three appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Hamilton died in 1968 at the age of 77.
