Jack Miller was born in Ohio in 1917. He came to Kansas as part of the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Independence.
Miller began working for the Independence Reporter and moved to Coffeyville in 1947 to work for station KGGF and the local newspaper. Miller was also a player-manager for teams in Independence and Coffeyville that played in the NBC State Tournament.
Miller also began a long career as a football official and would work at the high school, NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA levels.
In 1950, he came to Wichita to write for the Wichita Beacon. Two years later, he began working for Hap Dumont and the National Baseball Congress.
In 1954, KAKE-TV signed on the air and hired Miller as its sports reporter and anchor. His nightly news segment “What’s the Score with Jack Miller” was popular and Miller remained at KAKE until 1975.
After leaving television, he opened Miller’s Liquor Store, which he operated for nine years before retiring. Miller died in 1994 at the age of 77.
