Lance Nichols grew up in Lyndon and graduated from Lyndon High School. He then attended Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) where he played football, basketball and baseball.
Upon graduation, Nichols signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played in their organization from 1961 to 1967, reaching the Triple-A level. After his professional playing career, Nichols was an All-American catcher played for the 1968 NBC World Series champion Liberal BeeJays.
At this time, Nichols moved to Dodge City where he was a teacher and coach for five years. He returned to professional baseball as a field manager in the Montreal and Baltimore organizations. In 1984, he became director of field operations for Philadelphia and director of player development in 1989.
Nichols later was a scout for Colorado, Montreal and Washington.
Nichols died in Dodge City on March 9, 2024. He was 84 years of age.
