Red Phillips was born in Oklahoma but spent most of his life in Wichita, where he worked for Boeing. 

He was 26 when he broke into the majors with Detroit. The Tigers called him up briefly in 1934 and sent him back to the minors. Then they called him up again in 1936 and he appeared in 29 games and posted a 2-4 record. 

During World War II Phillips worked for Boeing and managed in the minor leagues, including his in his hometown Pauls Valley of the Sooner State League, which included several top Wichita players.

Phillips died in Wichita in 1988.  He was 79 years of age.
