Todd Tichenor began umpiring at age 12 in Garden City. He also played baseball in high school and at Garden City Community College from 1996-97. After his playing days, Tichenor attended the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring School in Kissimmee, FL. Among 300 students, Tichenor was one of 17 who landed a job in the minor leagues.
He initially worked games in the Pioneer League before graduating to the South Atlantic League, Carolina League, Pacific Coast League and Arizona Fall League. While in Triple-A in 2007, Tichenor was called to work a major league game at Dodger Stadium. It was his tenth wedding anniversary. It was the start of five seasons of major league fill-in work.
In 2012, Tichenor became a full time MLB umpire. He has worked two no-hitters and Dallas Braden’s perfect game in 2010. He was selected to work the 2014 All-Star Game and ten post-season series, including five divisional series, two league championship series and the 2020 World Series between Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Tichenor was the rightfield umpire in the 2014 American Wildcard Game when the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Oakland A’s in one of the most significant wins in Royals history.
