Royce Washburn was born in Wichita in 1894. He was a career minor leaguer, playing 16 seasons, mostly in midwestern cities.
Royce first played professionally as a 17-year-old for the Class D Great Bend Millers.
In 1917, he played the final part of the season with the Wichita Witches and would spend the next five years with Wichita Class A teams – the Witches, Jobbers and Wolves.
A second baseman, Washburn hit .319 in 1921 as the Witches won the Western League championship. Washburn led the league with 170 runs scored.
He would play minor league ball until 1932, never reaching above the AA level. He was all-time Tulsa Oilers team.
Washburn died in 1969 at the age of 75.
