Mitch Webster was born in Larned in 1959. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the 23rd round of of the 1977 MLB Draft and signed by Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame member John Keenan.
Webster was subsequently selected by Toronto the 1979 Minor League Draft. A switch-hitting outfielder, he broke in with Toronto in 1983 and spent parts of three seasons with the Blue Jays. He was traded to Montreal during the 1985 season.
Webster experienced his greatest major league success as an Expo. In 1986, he hit .290 with 36 stolen bases and a league-leading 13 triples. The next season he hit .281 with 33 steals.
The Expos sent Webster to the Chicago Cubs in 1988. He also played with Cleveland and Pittsburgh before signing with the Dodgers as a free agent in 1991. Webster played four more seasons with the Dodgers, retiring in 1995.
In his 13-year career, Webster slashed .263/.330/.401 with 70 home runs and 160 steals in 1,265 games, driving in 342 runs and scoring 504 times while mostly batting in the leadoff position.
As an outfielder, he committed just 42 errors in 2,007 fielding chances for a .979 fielding percentage.
Following retirement, Webster was a coach in the Dodgers’ organization for four seasons, then scouted for ten years. In 2009, he moved to the Kansas City Royals as their Midwest Regional Scouting Supervisor.
Webster serves on the board of advisors for the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame.
